About me
Carla French specializes in elementary mathematics teaching. She is currently a grade 5/6/8 math/science teacher with CBE and a sessional instructor with the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean satellite program in Calgary. Carla is dedicated to helping teachers develop their mathematics pedagogy by developing a deep understanding of content and employing explicit teaching methods aligned with the Science of Learning research. Her focus is creating systematically sequenced lessons based on variation theory with the goal of reducing cognitive load and creating a truly inclusive learning environment. To enhance mathematics culture in elementary schools, Carla developed a school-wide program, Problem of the Week, that engages K-6 learners and teachers in systematically solving a series of increasingly difficult problems. The animated PowerPoint problems engage students while also developing teacher pedagogical content knowledge.
Carla has a Master’s Degree in Educational Research focusing on Mathematics and Leadership. She holds a B.Ed in French Immersion teaching and a B.Comm in Finance with a Dance minor.
