You just got a new student, and you heard they don’t speak English! Whether you are a generalist, math teacher, administrator, or anything else, you want to give them a great learning experience and this session can help you do it.

In this engaging and interactive session, we will explore the powerful role of play in supporting English as an Additional Language (EAL *AKA: ESL/ELL/ML) students and benefiting learners of all backgrounds. Note: This session is suitable for educators working with EAL students at various grade levels and across different subject areas. No prior experience with playful learning approaches is required.

Providing educators with concrete examples on how to create authentic real world projects that are directly connected to the high school curriculum. This session will also refer to outcome based assessment and how real projects can be assessed in this manner.

Throughout this session Amanda and Peter will share practical examples of how K-12 teachers can create time and space in their classrooms to engage all learners in thinking and making their thinking visible. Teachers will take an active role in experiencing key thinking routines that they can then take back and try out in their settings. Incorporating Visible Thinking leads to deeper student engagement, effective differentiation and a reduced teacher work load!

This session looks at Neurographic art through the lens of water colour. Neurographic art is a simple way to work with the subconscious mind through drawing. While this concept certainly falls within the realm of soft science the experiences and art pieces my students have created over the years have made this a staple in my water colour unit for grades 7-12. This style of art creation can have a calming effect on the artists and is a great project to inject within exam time, pre-vacation and as a simple introduction to how water colour as a medium responds to layering.

Don't all science teachers wish we had a list at our fingertips of proven labs or demos, rather than always trying to come up with something on our own? Join in collaboration with other Junior High and High School science teachers across the districts and a variety of classrooms and divisions to share your knowledge or expertise (or sheer lived out experience) of what works and what doesn't work. Participants are asked to come prepared with a digital list of your favourite 'go to' demos and labs (including materials and procedures) for any Div 3 or 4 science class that you teach. The intention is to collaborate with one another and to leave with a great list of labs or demos that anyone can pull from, given the amount of time and/or resources you may have.

Explore the world of both two- and three-dimensional media, such as acrylic paint, oil pastels, colored pencils, watercolour pencils and stencils to add texture and dimension to create a few artworks. This session includes an image transfer project as well as an unique ground effect for a landscape painting. The techniques presented (creating textures, blending colours and overlapping) can be modified/ adapted for all grade levels and are suitable for all levels and abilities. All the supplies are being provided and the fee for this session is $10.

Mixed Media- Projects for all seasons
Watercolours and oil pastels techniques are being explored and demonstrated in this session. The participants will use and apply these techniques to create a few art projects. Composition, design and color will be examined to guide the participants find their own inner artistic talents . The projects presented are being demonstrated step-by-step and can be adapted to any grade level to address a variety of learning styles. All the supplies are included and the fee for this session is $10.

A taste of Art- Oil Pastels Projects
Various techniques and strategies to effectively use the vibrant colours of the oil pastels are demonstrated in this session. Creating new colours, blending colours and achieving texture will be explored by step-by-step demonstration of each project. These projects can be modified for any grade level and abilities. All the supplies are being provided and the fee for this session is $10.

Monoprinting Beyond Realism
Create beautiful projects and learn techniques and methods that give your artwork movement, life, and dimension! In this session, the participants will work with a limited palette of colours to focus on specific monoprinting methods using a variety of tools and materials. A few projects will be demonstrated step-by-step and can be modified for any grade level and abilities. All the supplies are being provided and the fee for this session is $10.
