PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY “On the two school days of your assigned teachers’ convention, you have a legal and professional responsibility to attend convention. If you are not able to make it safely to your assigned convention, however, your collective agreement may include impassable roads or inclement weather clauses that you can access. The added layer of gender diversity among youth in schools today adds complexity to the role of an educator—especially if you are unsure where you stand. This discussion is needed now more than ever while misinformation floods social media and as more transgender representation has led to a steadier rising number of teens expecting gender to go beyond the binary.
Throughout the training, participants will engage in interactive discussions, case studies, and scenario-based exercises covering:
Understanding Gender Identity: Gain a deeper understanding of gender identity and explore the complexities of transgender experiences. Learn about different gender expressions, terminology, and developmental stages of gender identity.
Transgender Challenges and Barriers: Delve into the unique challenges and barriers faced by transgender youth and their families in various aspects of life, including school. Explore topics such as gender dysphoria, social stigma, and discrimination.
Providing Support and Allyship: Acquire skills to provide practical support and allyship to transgender students and their caregivers. This includes understanding when and how to involve a parent or other resources.
As a parent of two transgender children, Tammy Plunkett knows all too well the overwhelming amount of learning that comes with understanding gender diversity. When her first child came out, she messed up pronouns, secretly lived with fear and doubt, and went through a grieving process... Read More →
