The Shroud and Science: An interdisciplinary approach to the world’s most studied religious artifact
Friday February 21, 2025 09:00 - 10:00 MST
Since its appearance in 14th century France, the Shroud of Turin has garnered great attention and scrutiny. Devotees claim it is burial cloth of Jesus Christ, detractors dismiss it as a medieval forgery, while the Vatican remains largely agnostic on the subject.
After a photographic negative revealed a detailed face on the Shroud, swathes of experts have poured over its fabric to make sense of the phenomenon given its lack of pigment or other obvious means of instilling a negative image. The extensive analysis from forensic pathologists, physicists, botanists, microbiologists, and statisticians explored in this talk provides Religious Educators with a model for considering the fruitful relationship between faith and reason while exploring how science can illumine and intersect with religious claims.

Elves, Orcs, Hobbits and the Meaning of Life According to J.R.R. Tolkien: A Theological Investigatio
Friday February 21, 2025 10:20 - 11:20 MST
The enigmatic and obscure Oxford philologist, J.R.R. Tolkien produced a corpus of writings on the world of Middle Earth that has captivated countless readers. The cinematic renderings of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit has further popularized his works, yet readers and viewers alike are often surprised at the profound impression Tolkien’s Catholic faith has made upon his writings. C.S. Lewis, a close friend and associate whose encouragement was necessary for Tolkien to publish, wove Christian themes within his works via allegory. Tolkien, on the other hand, chose a much different and more sophisticated approach in creating the drama of the Rings of Power. This talk offers educators of Literature and Religion insight into the life and works of Tolkien and the undercurrents within thought—and how these can be made accessible to students in the classroom.

Why do bad things happen to good people? Framing the problem of evil in Religious Education
Friday February 21, 2025 11:40 - 12:40 MST
In Oscar Wilde’s Importance of Being Earnest, we hear “The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what Fiction means.” Though a flippant remark about romance novels, the quip points us to a profound conundrum: how do we make sense of evil and the lack of justice in this world? Weighty queries such as these are among the most challenging posed by students and teachers can find themselves flat footed when asked to account for ruptures in the fabric of life. Designed for Religious Educators, this talk offers educators a variety of models and approaches supplied by the Bible as well as philosophers that can be employed in the classroom.

Tracey will help guide you through the process, starting with easy diagnostic assessments then how to use that data to set up simple treatment plans for your small groups (Tier 2 and 3). Suggestions for resource materials, timelines, progress monitoring tips, and time management will be explored. NOTE: The first part of this session will be for information and the second part will be for questions and demonstrations (if time.) Handouts for this session will be available at https://mackjacklearning.ca/academy/ (under "Workshop Handouts").
