We have decided to start pre-registration on January 11th to make sure everyone is informed of the start time and has time to check out the sessions as the first week back to school can be quite hectic.
FOR PRE-REGISTERED SESSIONS PLEASE USE THE PRE-REGISTRATION LINK BELOW THE SESSION DESCRIPTION IN SCHED. Adding the session to your Sched schedule does not mean you are pre-registered. The number in the title shows how many will be allowed to attend the session. We do allow more names to be added, but they will be on the waiting list. This is explained on the pre-registration page.

Are you a K-3 French Immersion teacher who is implementing the new FILAL (French Immersion Language Arts and Literature) curriculum? Are you feeling a bit insecure, or maybe even lost and confused? Do you find yourself looking for resources, answers, and support? This session is for you. We will spend time talking about the reality of implementing the new FILAL curriculum. For those who teach English as well, we can also touch on how FILAL fits in with the ELAL curriculum.
Please note, this is a collaborative session. The facilitator is not a curriculum specialist, but a Grade 3 FI teacher. She will facilitate a session where K-3 FI teachers can get together and share, brainstorm and learn from each other.

Why do we need to place a priority on our financial wellness? Why is being financially prepared so important? 
Did you know that financial wellness is just one of the many dimensions of wellness and prioritizing a strong, healthy financial wellness can help you stay mentally healthy and able to face other life's challenges.

Teachers can get so busy taking care of the needs of others that they often don’t have time to focus on their own wellness – but it’s crucial. Financial wellness is a big part of that. 40% of Canadians in a recent study who say they’re “financially unwell” are more likely to report stress associated with their money troubles. 88% of those say they’re “often” or “sometimes” worried about their finances, 49% say it distracts them at work.

What if there was a way to easily learn tools – things you can set up in just a few minutes – to help alleviate that stress? The first step is knowing what some of these are – and that’s why this session was developed.

This session is built to give you tools to take control of your financial wellness. How to start saving - an emergency fund plus save for your future. Where and how to invest your hard earned money, we take a look at the markets and they affect your investments. Easy budgeting tips - should I pay down my debt or save for the future? Is a common question we answer here! We also look at the biggest financial risks that can happen to you and how to lessen their impact. The rising costs of long term care and the financial impact of a life changing illness are two of the most common financial risks that we may face in our lives. Being financially prepared is the key to strong financial wellness.

Free Indigenous Lessons Created by Indigenous Educators: Pre-Contact, Contact, Treaties, Colonialism and The Indian Act

Lessons created and reviewed by Indigenous educators across Canada, including Alberta, provide age-appropriate content about the historical experience of Life on Turtle Island prior and after contact with Europeans, and the ensuing treaties, colonialism and Indian Act that impacts Indigenous Peoples today. Designed for grades 4 to 9, these online lessons include a guide to using respectful language and accompanying resources for students to build literacy and reflect on their own learning. These lessons and resources are provided free to teachers by Kids Boost Immunity where student learning is tied to helping others if teachers choose to have students do quizzes and earn vaccines through UNICEF (hence the name). Kids Boost Immunity is an approved resource for the Palliser School District. Teachers can enjoy an interactive experience and become students if they have their phone or notebook to access the lessons being shown online. They can experience firsthand the fun of completing quizzes and will be shown the program view for teachers who can monitor student participation in real time.

Keeping cakes moist, crumb coat, and piping will all be addressed as well as applying and decorating with fondant. Develop safe Whittling skills (woodcarving) through a variety of small hands-on projects. This 1-day off-site workshop builds knowledge, skill, and ability using simple tools, & common materials typically found within CTF/CTR classrooms. Whittling is therapeutic in nature, providing opportunity to individually focus on developing participants overall well being. Tools & Materials, and take home projects provided. Participants have opportunity to purchase starter kits if interested to continue at home.

Free Indigenous Lessons Created by Indigenous Educators: Pre-Contact, Contact, Treaties, Colonialism and The Indian Act **REPEAT SESSION

Lessons created and reviewed by Indigenous educators across Canada, including Alberta, provide age-appropriate content about the historical experience of Life on Turtle Island prior and after contact with Europeans, and the ensuing treaties, colonialism and Indian Act that impacts Indigenous Peoples today. Designed for grades 4 to 9, these online lessons include a guide to using respectful language and accompanying resources for students to build literacy and reflect on their own learning. These lessons and resources are provided free to teachers by Kids Boost Immunity where student learning is tied to helping others if teachers choose to have students do quizzes and earn vaccines through UNICEF (hence the name). Kids Boost Immunity is an approved resource for the Palliser School District. Teachers can enjoy an interactive experience and become students if they have their phone or notebook to access the lessons being shown online. They can experience firsthand the fun of completing quizzes and will be shown the program view for teachers who can monitor student participation in real time.

Increasingly sophisticated displays of artificial intelligence such as CHATGPT has elicited variegated responses ranging from experts decrying the need for regulation to educators embracing new possibilities for lesson planning and student learning. While many marvel at the alacrity by which AI is transforming society, AI is forcing people to ask themselves questions such as “what exactly divides humanity from machines?” This talk, designed for religious educators, delves into that question. One obvious answer is that machines don’t have souls. But is that really the case? And if so, why? Here we look at what exactly is a soul in light of Sacred Scripture as well as ancient and modern philosophy with the aim of better grasping human-AI distinctions.

Through our combined experiences, we have implemented various time saving techniques as well as utilize websites to help maintain an overcome the mountain of expectations of our profession. We've put into practices several things that help us stay sane and caught up with the ever growing "MUST DO!" list. Connecting Google Classroom with outside websites like Pear deck, GoNoodle, ZipGrade, Flippity, Orange Slice, Classroom Economy and Microsoft OneNote. All of these websites and tools help keep us organized, and foster a greater sense of student ownership and participation in our student's learning. With this session, our hope is that we help teachers (new and experienced) who would like to implement simple and engaging systems into their teaching. We feel like this session would be most beneficial to new educators that are just entering into their career. The last part of the session will be playing and experimenting with these websites and sharing beneficial resources - breaking up into smaller groups to have some collaborative time! We All Belong in Nature

Nature supports wellness in many ways, but not all students have equitable access to nature. Mainstream outdoor education is inaccessible, exclusive, and expensive. It perpetuates systemic racism, ableism, classism, heterosexism, sexism, cissexism, and sizeism. Many youth feel ignored, unwelcome, and unprepared in outdoor education.

Join Jaclyn Angotti, CPAWS Education Director, as we explore the concrete jungle downtown to demonstrate how to make outdoor education inclusive for all – no matter where you are! Learn how you can provide inclusive nature connection opportunities that support your students’ wellbeing. This outdoor session will help guide your role as a teacher in responding to inequity in outdoor education. Jaclyn will demonstrate how to take your favourite environmental lesson plans and apply cross-cultural guidelines to make your lessons more accessible for all your students!

LOCATION & PARTICIPANT PREPARATION DETAILS: 
With our session set to unfold OUTDOORS - in the plazas and pedestrian corridors surrounding the Hyatt & Calgary Telus Convention Centre (H&CTCC), we will gather first at the Convention Information Desk area 15 minutes prior to the start of the session and then head outside as a group.   • Please bring writing utensils and a journal or clipboard, if possible. 
  • As detailed in the safety section below, please come prepared to be active outside for 2.5 hours – i.e., wearing appropriate clothing & footwear, and outfitted with water & snacks.

I hope that you can join me for my fly tying session this year. We will meet at my school (St. Luke's Outreach) in Okotoks which is located at; 23 Riverside Drive, T1S 1B3. We are on the 3rd floor. We will begin tying at 10 am at the school and tie until noon. We will break for lunch and then begin our second half of the session again at 1pm. We will then tie a few more flies and then we will finish around 3pm. I am requesting that each participant pay a $10 fee to cover the costs of the tying materials for this session. It does not matter if you are an accomplished tier or if you have never tried this activity before, you are all welcome to join us.

Purposeful play, risky play, and free play are basic childhood needs. But play is more than just fun and games and should be part of any well-planned, quality physical education program. Through play, students in any physical education program learn societal roles, norms, and values and develop physical and cognitive skills, creativity, self-worth, independence, and competency.
Children's opportunities for outdoor play and acquiring the skills associated with being resourceful and inquisitive in outdoor spaces have been reduced significantly over the past generations. One of the reasons for this is the view that outdoor play and learning in the outdoor environment can be too dangerous or that it is not as important as other activities. Reversing this trend requires both a societal shift and a commitment by physical education teachers to utilize the outdoors more in both meaningful and pedagogically purposeful ways.
This session will inform all attendees about the benefits of 'being' and 'learning' in the outdoors as well as share current research related to risky play and how the outdoors is beneficial to students' physical and mental health and social well-being. It is hoped that all attendees will reflect on their own teaching practices and consider what changes they could make to include more outdoor learning and exposure to outdoor environments for their students.

This session explores the ‘boy crisis’ in education and potential ways an approach that addresses gender bias can improve academic achievement and wellness outcomes for boys in K-12 schools. First, we will discuss the issues impeding boys' achievement in schools and the impact an approach without gender bias can have on boys' educational outcomes. The largest impact on boys' underachievement in schools is, more broadly, unhealthy perceptions of masculinity in school and society. Therefore, an approach to addressing the ‘boy crisis’ needs to be done by shifting stereotypes of masculinity and boyhood. This session will share current research in the field that first considers the ‘boy crisis’ and then speak to the importance of an intersectional lens when examining boys' education.

The added layer of gender diversity among youth in schools today adds complexity to the role of an educator—especially if you are unsure where you stand. Humans lie at the heart of park purpose, pride, prejudice, and promise. So, come hike with us, Teacher humans! And together, we’ll trail-travel into the ‘peopled’ heart of Alberta’s protected and public wild spaces, from nation-building believing to Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas achieving. 

With ecojustice as our compass, we will not only explore the intricate interactions and ecosystems our parks seek to protect, but also empower YOUR humanity to ‘make better’ Alberta’s parks for all!

LOCATION: Nose Hill Park – Calgary Winter Club Parking Lot: 4611 14 St NW; Calgary; T2K 1J7 

Meet at the Nose Hill Park parking lot located behind the Calgary Winter Club. CPAWS will be on-site 30 minutes ahead of session start time to welcome and gather everyone together. You will need to arrange your own transportation. If you are late, lost, or cannot make it, please text or call Sheri at 403-921-2314. 

What to Bring: 
As detailed in the safety section below, please come prepared to be active outside for 2.5 hours – i.e., wearing appropriate clothing & footwear, and outfitted with water & snacks.

  • Please consult local weather forecasts and come equipped with wind & temperature appropriate clothing and footwear, i.e. comfortable winter boots, ice cleats, gloves, mittens, hats, scarves and instant handwarmers/heat packs.
  • If there are any medical concerns (allergies/injuries) that CPAWS should be aware of, please be in-touch with Sheri via text @ 403-921-2314 in advance of the program’s start time. This will ensure that she can customize the route and activities for everyone’s needs. 
  • All participants that require medical equipment/medication such as an EpiPen & inhaler are expected to have these with them during the program in accordance with our risk management policy.

In the transformative era of education, Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands to redefine teaching and learning practices. My proposal, a hands-on exploration of AI tools like ChatGPT in K-9 classrooms, offers a compelling, forward-thinking workshop for your convention.

During this session, I'll demonstrate how AI can significantly improve student outcomes. Participants will learn how AI's data analytics can provide personalized insights on student performance, enabling tailored support to boost grades. I'll also show how AI's instant feedback capabilities can lead to swift mistake correction, essential for a dynamic learning environment.

Teachers will uncover practical strategies to implement AI tools in their daily routines, enabling them to work smarter and more effectively. My session will emphasize the importance of teachers harnessing AI as a teaching ally, not just a student tool. I'll share concrete examples of how AI can support diverse learners, including struggling students and English Language Learners.

With this workshop, my goal is to equip educators with the knowledge and skills to confidently navigate this new landscape, transforming their classrooms into dynamic, responsive learning environments. Restorative practices is a field within the social sciences that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities.

As an introduction International Institute for Restorative Practices full two-day training, this session will highlight the importance and impact of restorative practices on learning environments and entire schools. At our best or at our worst? Hobbes, Rousseau, the Bible and the Debate over Human Nature

Who are we? Are humans intrinsically good and upright or hopelessly corrupt and prone to violence? Students attuned to current affairs reporting deadly wars, tragic genocide, and political strife, may aver animus runs deep within us. Those who consider increases in longevity, the standard of living, and technological progress may well assume we are fundamentally altruistic and benevolent. So which is it? Is the Hobbesian view casting life as “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” more convincing than the Rousseauian view that we are blank slates, intrinsically good at birth? How one answers the question is key for interpreting not just history but one’s own life and humanity as a whole. The debate, moreover, is not just philosophical but religious as we see similar questions raised from the opening pages of the Bible. This talk provides a framework for teachers to understand the contending philosophical claims of Hobbes and Rousseau as well as Biblical perspectives on this weighty question while making connections to outcomes in Religious Education, particularly in light of the Christian vision of the human person.

A former teacher turned mental health counsellor takes you through exercises that can take between a few seconds to a few minutes to intentionally practice self-nourishing habits on a daily basis. Learn about some of the science behind the power of mindfulness and self-regulation for overall well-being. Practice fine tuning coping strategies to be adaptive and tailored to your specific needs. Coping strategies range from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) derived material to holistic mind-body connection practices. We are presenting a workshop on Indigenous Perspectives that includes "hands-on" experiential sessions with teachers actively participating in an "Educational Teaching" Sweat Lodge, Indigenous games and traditions, and discussions with regards to the application of foundational knowledge regarding Alberta Education's curriculum and First Nations, Metis, and Inuit.

Where: Camp Horizon ( Located about 50 minutes West of Calgary just past Bragg Creek) Hwy 66 10 KM Southwest of Bragg Creek, Bragg Creek, AB T0L 0K0

What: Our planned Indigenous Perspectives workshop will include the following:
1.) Teaching/Educational Sweat Lodge Experience conducted by Indigenous Elders
2.) Indigenous Traditional games and talking circle
3.) Applying Foundational Knowledge about First Nations, Metis, Inuit and curriculum connections.

George Taven of Seeds Connections will be hosting the day and coordinating the logistics. Walter White Bear will be the Keynote speaker and Sweat Lodge Elder.

Walter will also engage several other locally recognized and respected elders to assist with the other sessions throughout the day.

KEY POINTS

1.) This workshop will be conducted at Camp Horizon from 8:30am - 3:00 pm . Teachers are responsible for their own transportation.

3.) We can have up to 50 people register.

4.) It is vital to read the attachments which are descriptions of each of the sessions as well as expectations and appropriate dress and details of what people should be aware of if they are planning to participate in the Educational Teaching Sweat Lodge.

5.) Teachers need to bring their own bag lunches. Participants should bring their own water bottle.

6.) Teachers wanting to participate in the Teaching Sweat must bring appropriate change of clothes and towel.

7.) We will require each participant to fill out and sign an Acknowledgement of Risk form when they first arrive.

Barrier 1: "Why can't you 'control' your class?!?": How a fear of being judged by our colleagues, supervisors and community keeps us from connecting.
Shifting our thinking from a position of fear to one of expertise and success is key! This section will focus on working WITH students to find success. Come prepared to play our favorite games and learn out most effective strategies for helping your student with basic multiplication fluency. Games and strategies will focus on the following: square facts used as benchmarks, pattern and skip counting using number lines, building arrays and area models, commutative and associative properties - all ways to mastering basic facts. Engaged practice with games incorporating the use of cards, dice, math shakers will be taught. Games are easy to differentiate and use either whole class or in small group instruction. Grade 3 teachers, as well as Junior high teachers may want to attend this session if they have students still needing work on basic multiplication. Though targeted at CTF teachers wanting to explore Environmental Stewardship, this collaborative and hands-on workshop, is applicable no matter which grade or subject area you teach. Barrier 3: “I just don’t have time for this right now!”: How being overwhelmed by schedules, obligations and a lack of “time” turn molehills into mountains!
Having a solid and structured plan and a consistent set of expectations are a key element to setting up a space where everyone can feel safe. Where we often go “off the rails” is either by expecting too much or being so committed to a “plan” that we cannot be flexible. This session will focus on strategies for evaluating the environment and the impacts it has on behaviour and skills for balancing consistency with flexibility.
Barrier 4: “I am just done, I have had ENOUGH!”- The importance of self-regulation and the role it plays in co-regulation! When your tank is empty, you are not going anywhere!
Self-regulation is the key to successful co-regulation. Looking at recommended strategies for keeping ourselves calm so that we can help others to learn to regulate their own emotions.

Why invest in space exploration?

Dr. David Naylor, Department of Physics & Astronomy
Over the last two decades Dr Naylor has led Canada’s involvement in the Herschel/SPIRE and SPICA/Safari space missions. Prior to this he worked at the European Space Agency on the ISO/ LWS mission. With space exploration missions costing between 1 and 10 B$, he is often asked “Why should we spend money on these projects when there are so many problems here on Earth?

His lecture will provide his unique perspective on this question. He will review the current state of international space exploration activities and briefly review Canada’s space exploration program.

He will discuss lesser appreciated benefits that arise from space exploration and present a few specific examples of innovations that we take for granted that came directly from the space program. He will conclude with a discussion of three innovations that have spun off from the space missions in which he has been involved; two of which are being commercialized in Lethbridge.

Come prepared to play and learn some of our favorite Box Cars games for teaching: word families and rhyme, spelling simple CVC words, vowels, two-syllable words, word play including ideas for synonyms, antonyms and homonyms. Games will also incorporate the use of literacy tiles and word decks. Games are easy to differentiate and use in either whole class or small group instruction. The session is appropriate for primary, ESL, upper elementary special ed programs. Ideas can be used as a family literacy night or for practice at home.

Congo for the Taking… (Part 1) Leopold’s Congo Free State to ‘Independence’

This session examines the history of Congo as a case study of Imperialism… from Leopold’s Congo to ‘Independence’. It focuses on the roles of foreign actors, including Canada, and their motives. Were they truly motivated by the enlightened Idealism they professed or the dark Realism described by Joseph Conrad, “The conquest of the earth is not a pretty thing when you look into it too much”? The session quotes from "Heart of Darkness" to illustrate the continuity of Realism in Imperial policy from Leopold's Congo to ‘Independence’ and challenges many of our most cherished historical myths… including the admission in a DND document that Canadian Peacekeepers played a vital role in Prime Minister Lumumba’s capture leading to his assassination. Kwame Nkrumah, Politburo members and US NSC staff explain how UN Peacekeepers were misused for Neocolonial control in Congo. As we shall see in Part 2, this quote regarding Eisenhower’s order to kill Lumumba still applies today, "the norms of private life and of a polity regulated by law are only with difficulty invoked in global politics.” Whether the scramble for rubber, copper, coltan or cobalt... in International Politics, "The strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must". We will explore the implications of this history for Social Studies Curricula.

Topics include - Lumumba’s assassination, Hammarskjold’s death, Katangan succession, Mobutu’s rise, The Rwandan Genocide, Kagame’s rise and Rwanda/Uganda’s invasion of Congo (5 million deaths). It focuses on the roles of foreign actors, including Canada, and their motives. Were they truly motivated by the enlightened Idealism they professed or by the dark Realism described by Joseph Conrad, “It was just robbery with violence, aggravated murder on a great scale”? This session quotes from "Heart of Darkness" to illustrate the continuity of Realism in Imperial policy from Leopold to the present and challenges many of our most cherished historical myths including our ‘Peacekeeping’ missions … and make it embarrassingly clear that General Dallaire’s presentation of Paul Kagame in “Shake Hands with the Devil” as a hero of Idealism masks the truth of Kagame’s massive war crimes. “What redeems it is the idea only” (Conrad). Boutros-Ghali, (“Was this not Fashoda?”) and others describe how UN Peacekeepers were misused by our Anglo-American Alliance to wrest control in Rwanda and Congo from France (Franc Afrique) and if that was a Geopolitical error… as now China is the rising Neocolonial Master of Congo. Magic The Gathering is a card game from Wizards of the Coast that was started in 1993 by Richard Garfield. It is a strategy game where you and your opponent(s) build decks that will help you reduce the opposition's life total to 0. More than a game, in a school setting, it provides students with fundamental skills such as Reading, Math, Logic, History, and art appreciation. It provides teachers with new ideas for Social Studies, English, and Art assignments, as students can learn by creating their cards.
The most important aspect of the Magic The Gathering game is how it brings kids together from all different socioeconomic backgrounds. It does not discriminate on age, gender, race, or social class, for where can you find the twelfth-grade high school quarterback sitting across from the captain of the ninth-grade coding club, discussing strategies and laughing and learning together. In this session, you will learn how to intergrade this game into your class by learning how to play. All levels of players are welcome to learn and play together.

Research has shown that students' success is directly related to the well-being of the adults supporting them. Evidence has historically shown that teachers experience a high level of burnout, and the likelihood increases when teachers are working with complex learners and/or in diverse classrooms.

An entire school climate can be positively impacted by leadership teams focusing on teacher wellness, as well as teachers learning the effect that our own well-being has in their classroom. Using the analogy of a pizza being placed in an oven without a pan, we will connect how one’s learning (or teaching) will be drastically impacted when their social emotional needs are not recognized or considered during lesson planning, as well as throughout the day.

Attendees will be asked to reflect on current practice, while exploring new perspectives and tools, allowing them to walk away from the session with a feeling of confidence of how they may approach their classroom design moving forward with a focus on wellness.

From a school wide perspective, attendees will be invited to collaborate and brainstorm on their current school practices for teacher wellness, as well as explore ways that could be presented to their school teams in the future.

The hope is for all attendees to walk away with skills and ideas to improve teacher wellness at a micro to macro level.

This session allows teachers to take a well-deserved hour for mindfulness and relaxation. Former teachers turned mental health counsellors guide you through some of the leading research on mindfulness and relaxation techniques for mental well-being. The majority of the session will be spent on practicing these strategies including mindfulness meditations, breathwork, somatic relaxation practices, and gentle movement. A yoga mat and/or blanket is recommended for your comfort. Taking time for oneself as a teacher is key to maintaining balance and avoiding burnout - use this hour during your teacher’s convention experience to do just that, and then take what you have learned to your daily teacher life! The presenters will also show you some simplified versions of these exercises that can be done in a short amount of time and can be worked into your schedule. All experience levels and abilities are welcomed, and modifications will be offered for every participant’s comfort and safety.

No strumming required…(but you can if you want to!) Ukulele for Children author Christina O'Brien will present some ideas to make teaching ukulele easy and accessible for all learners and all teachers! The tried and true UFC method emphasizes music reading on the treble staff, group music making, and tons of creativity. Teachers who are new to teaching ukulele or already have lots of experience, will walk away from this hands-on session with plenty of fresh ideas to incorporate ukulele in their teaching, as well as some reproducible handouts.

If you're new, or fairly new to teaching the ukulele at school, be sure to attend "Ukulele 101" right before this session as "Ukulele. Simplified" builds on the previous basics taught in "Ukulele 101."

There will be some ukuleles on site for participants to use. Make sure you arrive early to snag one!

During this session, participants will be provided with an overview of the Criminal and Youth Justice perspective on consent. Tools will be presented that may be used by school staff to explain consent to youth and case studies will be reviewed.

During this interactive session, participants will have the opportunity to review and book an RCMP presentation geared to students in grades 6-12. Participants will be encouraged to pose questions to gain strategies for addressing and responding to concerns regarding consent, internet safety, exploitation, and peer-on-peer sexual abuse among youth in their schools.
