We have decided to start pre-registration on January 11th to make sure everyone is informed of the start time and has time to check out the sessions as the first week back to school can be quite hectic.
FOR PRE-REGISTERED SESSIONS PLEASE USE THE PRE-REGISTRATION LINK BELOW THE SESSION DESCRIPTION IN SCHED. Adding the session to your Sched schedule does not mean you are pre-registered. The number in the title shows how many will be allowed to attend the session. We do allow more names to be added, but they will be on the waiting list. This is explained on the pre-registration page.

Photography is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. This session will provide an overview of the art and science of photography including exposure and composition. I will share resources that I use to teach photography from grades 7 through 12. While I will focus on techniques, I am happy to discuss the ins and outs of starting a photography program if that is of interest to participants.

Why do we need to place a priority on our financial wellness? Why is being financially prepared so important?
Did you know that financial wellness is just one of the many dimensions of wellness and prioritizing a strong, healthy financial wellness can help you stay mentally healthy and able to face other life's challenges.

Teachers can get so busy taking care of the needs of others that they often don’t have time to focus on their own wellness – but it’s crucial. Financial wellness is a big part of that. 40% of Canadians in a recent study who say they’re “financially unwell” are more likely to report stress associated with their money troubles. 88% of those say they’re “often” or “sometimes” worried about their finances, 49% say it distracts them at work.

What if there was a way to easily learn tools – things you can set up in just a few minutes – to help alleviate that stress? The first step is knowing what some of these are – and that’s why this session was developed.

This session is built to give you tools to take control of your financial wellness. How to start saving - an emergency fund plus save for your future. Where and how to invest your hard earned money, we take a look at the markets and they affect your investments. Easy budgeting tips - should I pay down my debt or save for the future? Is a common question we answer here! We also look at the biggest financial risks that can happen to you and how to lessen their impact. Free Indigenous Lessons Created by Indigenous Educators: Pre-Contact, Contact, Treaties, Colonialism and The Indian Act

Lessons created and reviewed by Indigenous educators across Canada, including Alberta, provide age-appropriate content about the historical experience of Life on Turtle Island prior and after contact with Europeans, and the ensuing treaties, colonialism and Indian Act that impacts Indigenous Peoples today. Designed for grades 4 to 9, these online lessons include a guide to using respectful language and accompanying resources for students to build literacy and reflect on their own learning. These lessons and resources are provided free to teachers by Kids Boost Immunity where student learning is tied to helping others if teachers choose to have students do quizzes and earn vaccines through UNICEF (hence the name). Kids Boost Immunity is an approved resource for the Palliser School District. Teachers can enjoy an interactive experience and become students if they have their phone or notebook to access the lessons being shown online. They can experience firsthand the fun of completing quizzes and will be shown the program view for teachers who can monitor student participation in real time.

In 2021, The Alberta Teachers' Association began to track the level of hopelessness of teachers and school leaders in Alberta through its pulse surveys. The findings indicated a high percentage of respondents reported feeling hopeless and indicated intentions to leave the teaching profession within the next five years. The Association, in partnership with Drs Denise Larson, Rebecca Hudson Breen, Darryl Hunter, and Veronica Taylor at the University of Alberta began to explore in more detail where members of the profession find hopefulness and what considerations are necessary for creating resilience and hope for the complex and relational work teachers and school leaders perform on a regular basis. This session will also focus on what supports will help boost retention in the teaching profession to continue the vibrant tradition of public education in our province.

Countless students and adults alike enjoy video games. But what exactly are they? A benign form of recreation, high art, engaging sport, or simply a terrible waste of time? This talk draws on insights from religion and philosophy, namely the Bible and Socrates, to explore what the wisdom of the past says about the nature of recreation as well as aesthetics and how this applies to video games. It also seeks to provide teachers with novel ideas about how to introduce discussions on the ethics and aesthetics of video games, which students, in turn, can apply to other everyday realities such as sports, music and dance.

War is a complex and emotionally difficult subject to cover deeply and effectively in class, but it can be done in a caring, engaging, and inspiring manner that promotes enduring lessons learned.
During this Canadian military history education session hosted by Valour Canada, attendees will observe different strategies and tactics teachers can employ in their classroom to increase student buy-in and more effectively educate about Canada's military history. Pedagogically speaking, the audience will see how hands-on, experiential learning (using scenarios presented to the students) can be used to elicit deeper critical thought from participating students. Methods for integrating discussion about positive citizenship will also be explored during this session.
At least two of the following activities will be demonstrated for the audience: The Sinking of Llandovery Castle (WW1; Gr. 4 and up), The Battle of Vimy Ridge (WW1; Gr. 4 and up), and D-Day: Operation Neptune (WW2; Gr. 8 and up). Sleep and its Impact on Athletic Performance

Sleep can be defined as a relatively stationary and recurrent state of being where rest and relaxation replenish the mind and body from the preceding stretch of wakefulness (Caia et al., 2018). The past decade has seen numerous studies that have advanced our understanding of the function of sleep (Phillips, 2018). Sleep is essential for healthy brain functioning and energy balance maintenance. Beyond the brain, every other body system also benefits from quality sleep. During sleep, physiological systems are maintained and improved (Phillips, 2018). Also, research has shown that sleep is important for physical health through sustained bone and growth repair and the promotion of normal cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune functioning. Accordingly, sleep studies are essential for both our current and future knowledge about the necessity of sleep for human function.

Decades of research have explored the basis of sleep and its effects on human health. However, much less research has looked at how sleep affects athletic performance, particularly in young athletes. This presentation will share a review of the literature which focuses on the relationship between sleep and athletic performance in young athletes, aged 15-24. A systematic search of the literature in four databases was performed, and retrieved articles were screened and either excluded or selected based on specific eligibility criteria. Upon synthesizing the data, three themes related to sleep and athletic performance emerged. These were physical performance, cognitive performance, and illness and injury. In general, the trends displayed an association between a better quantity and quality of sleep and improved physical and cognitive performance, as well as a reduced occurrence of illness and injury. These findings suggest that athletic performance in young athletes can be significantly improved by better sleep hygiene due to the associated improvement in the areas of physical performance, cognitive performance, and illness and injury.

Attendees of this presentation will leave with a much stronger understanding of how sleep affects the body and specifically, how young athletes can use sleep to gain a competitive edge and fully benefit from the power of quality sleep.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) affects approximately 4% of Canadians and is Canada’s leading developmental disability (CanFASD, 2023). Since FASD is more prevalent than Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, and Autism Spectrum Disorder, educators can expect to have at least one student with FASD in their classroom dynamic (ibid). Students with FASD bring many positive assets to the classroom; however, educators often report being unprepared for the various needs and challenges of the developmental disability. This presentation aims to support educational professionals to improve their classroom practice through research-driven instructional strategies and approaches for students with FASD. These practical ideas are presented within an RTI framework that both honours restorative justice and trauma-responsive approaches. Educators curious about FASD are also encouraged to attend as the strategies presented will be beneficial and appropriate to a wide range of students.

Increasingly sophisticated displays of artificial intelligence such as CHATGPT has elicited variegated responses ranging from experts decrying the need for regulation to educators embracing new possibilities for lesson planning and student learning. While many marvel at the alacrity by which AI is transforming society, AI is forcing people to ask themselves questions such as “what exactly divides humanity from machines?” This talk, designed for religious educators, delves into that question. One obvious answer is that machines don’t have souls. But is that really the case? And if so, why? Here we look at what exactly is a soul in light of Sacred Scripture as well as ancient and modern philosophy with the aim of better grasping human-AI distinctions.

Through our combined experiences, we have implemented various time saving techniques as well as utilize websites to help maintain an overcome the mountain of expectations of our profession. We've put into practices several things that help us stay sane and caught up with the ever growing "MUST DO!" list. Connecting Google Classroom with outside websites like Pear deck, GoNoodle, ZipGrade, Flippity, Orange Slice, Classroom Economy and Microsoft OneNote. All of these websites and tools help keep us organized, and foster a greater sense of student ownership and participation in our student's learning. With this session, our hope is that we help teachers (new and experienced) who would like to implement simple and engaging systems into their teaching. We feel like this session would be most beneficial to new educators that are just entering into their career. The last part of the session will be playing and experimenting with these websites and sharing beneficial resources - breaking up into smaller groups to have some collaborative time! Meaningful use of the Outdoors for your PE program

Purposeful play, risky play, and free play are basic childhood needs. But play is more than just fun and games and should be part of any well-planned, quality physical education program. Through play, students in any physical education program learn societal roles, norms, and values and develop physical and cognitive skills, creativity, self-worth, independence, and competency.
Children's opportunities for outdoor play and acquiring the skills associated with being resourceful and inquisitive in outdoor spaces have been reduced significantly over the past generations. One of the reasons for this is the view that outdoor play and learning in the outdoor environment can be too dangerous or that it is not as important as other activities. Reversing this trend requires both a societal shift and a commitment by physical education teachers to utilize the outdoors more in both meaningful and pedagogically purposeful ways.
This session will inform all attendees about the benefits of 'being' and 'learning' in the outdoors as well as share current research related to risky play and how the outdoors is beneficial to students' physical and mental health and social well-being. It is hoped that all attendees will reflect on their own teaching practices and consider what changes they could make to include more outdoor learning and exposure to outdoor environments for their students.

Let's talk about boys' education and the 'boy crisis'

This session explores the ‘boy crisis’ in education and potential ways an approach that addresses gender bias can improve academic achievement and wellness outcomes for boys in K-12 schools. First, we will discuss the issues impeding boys' achievement in schools and the impact an approach without gender bias can have on boys' educational outcomes. The largest impact on boys' underachievement in schools is, more broadly, unhealthy perceptions of masculinity in school and society. Therefore, an approach to addressing the ‘boy crisis’ needs to be done by shifting stereotypes of masculinity and boyhood. This session will share current research in the field that first considers the ‘boy crisis’ and then speak to the importance of an intersectional lens when examining boys' education.

Inclusion in the regular classroom for students with disabilities is viewed as important for equality in education. Alberta Education provides resources for teachers on how to collaborate with parents and how to provide quality supports and accommodations for students. Educators work hard to support students, yet we know little about how parents in Alberta perceive the process of accessing supports and the school-home collaboration. We interviewed parents of school-aged children about their experience of accessing special education services to find out what is working, what is not working, what would help parents during the process. The goal of this session is to share the parent perspective.

In this session you will walk away with a greater understanding of how to create courageous learning environments in your classroom. Environments that encourage engagement and buy-in from the students whether they are more quiet or bold. This session will teach skills of recognizing behaviour, allowing choice/autonomy and developing collaborative leadership skills as an educator that allows for kids to advocate for what they need. At our best or at our worst? Hobbes, Rousseau, the Bible and the Debate over Human Nature

Who are we? Are humans intrinsically good and upright or hopelessly corrupt and prone to violence? Students attuned to current affairs reporting deadly wars, tragic genocide, and political strife, may aver animus runs deep within us. Those who consider increases in longevity, the standard of living, and technological progress may well assume we are fundamentally altruistic and benevolent. So which is it? Is the Hobbesian view casting life as “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” more convincing than the Rousseauian view that we are blank slates, intrinsically good at birth? How one answers the question is key for interpreting not just history but one’s own life and humanity as a whole. The debate, moreover, is not just philosophical but religious as we see similar questions raised from the opening pages of the Bible. This talk provides a framework for teachers to understand the contending philosophical claims of Hobbes and Rousseau as well as Biblical perspectives on this weighty question while making connections to outcomes in Religious Education, particularly in light of the Christian vision of the human person.
